Prologue
It was three weeks before Christmas, in New York City, and Central Park was full of people of all ages bustling along with big bags full of presents for loved ones. People were practically running to and from their destinations. Though not everyone was rushing. Two people, a mother and daughter were slowly strolling through the park, taking in all the beauty of the wintery wonderland. They only had two small bags with them. It became evident that the two were very close; they both wore matching black turtleneck shirts and red skirts. Across the front of each of their turtlenecks were their names, embroidered with white thread. The little girls’ shirt read: Kaleigh, and her mothers shirt read: Alexa. Another thing that made the pair noticeable was that Alexa was pregnant, just by looking at her you could tell that she wasn’t more than 25 years old and Kaleigh was already 7, and yet it was blatantly obvious that Alexa was expecting a child soon.
As Alexa and Kaleigh walked through the park Kaleigh would point out different buildings and ask what they were, and Alexa would name all the different shops. But when Kaleigh pointed at the one building, a six story, gray-stone building; Alexa stopped walking:
“Mommy, mommy?”
“Yes sweetie, what do u need?”
“Mommy what’s that.”
“That,” Alexa paused, “That’s the orphanage Kaleigh.” Kaleigh looked up at her mother with a confused look on her face.
“Mom, what is an orphanage?” Alexa didn’t answer for a few moments trying to find the best way to explain an orphanage.
“Kaleigh …an orphanage is the place where all the children who don’t have parents live.” “Oh,” said Kaleigh thoughtfully as they began to walk again. She couldn’t understand why but she had a nagging feeling about the orphanage.Luv ya all!
